  • Lonesome George, the only surviving specimen of the giant tortoise of the species Chelonoidis nigra abingdoni that was one found on Pinta Island, Galapagos. This only specimen of its kind  left was when this photo was taken in 2011 kept at Darwin Research Station, Santa Cruz, the Galapagos. Born around 1910, died 24. June 2012.  Photo from July 2011.

  • "Harriet".  The famous Galapagos Giant Turtle (Geochelone elephantopus) posibly collected by Charles Darwin at Isla Santa Cruz (Galapagos islands) in 1835. It is said that the turtle was brought back to London with HMS Beagle (the famous ship that carried Darwing around the World for 5 years) and on the same ship to Brisbane, Australia in 1842.  "Harriet" lived Australia Zoo near Brisbane until she died peacefully on 23rd June 2006, about 176 years old.
